George Clooney talking to People.com:

"I would rather have a prostate exam on live television by a guy with very cold hands than have a Facebook page."

Blogs are sooo much cooler!

Liz's sister, Jen, came to town last night so us girls hit the town in celebration. Unfortunately we stayed out a lot later than planned and I sauntered in at 3:30 this morning.  I do not do well on lack of sleep.  Liz called at 8am, her and Jen had to catch a bus and she wanted to talk to me about Grey's, and I went right back to bed until my Mom called at 10:30.  I spoke with my family and Jamie and by 1pm was ready to go back to bed.  I woke up again at 4pm this afternoon and the day was gone.  I was suppose to be going to my floor mate's 21st birthday party in the city tonight but there's no way.  It sounded like a good time as he rented out the top floor of the Consortium, but one big night is enough.  I would be a zombie if I tried to drag my butt out again tonight.

Jenn and Liz are champs and are partying again tonight, this time in Airlie beach.  Good luck ladies!

I received this email yesterday and thought you guys would get a kick out of it.  This is what life at Rotary is like, threat, after threat, after threat.  I pay $170/wk to be harassed by the heads.  I'll be glad to leave residence and head home to my nice double bed and no brick walls!!

Please pay attention to what I have to say or it could cost you a lot of money.
The management of Halls of Residents has incured over $40 000 in fees from the Fire Brigade for attending fire alarms so far this year.
This cost will no longer be covered by the Halls if you are found in any way to be the cause of a fire alarm.
In the future if you cause a fire alarm to be set off, even by mistake, you will be liable for the $990 the fire department charges the Halls. You may also be fined a further $250 by the halls of residents for causing an alarm.
So please be very mindful when you are cooking or even putting deodorant on in your room that you do not set off an alarm. The sensors in your room are very sesitive to almost any particles in the air including deodorants, hairspray, sprayon tan and talc powder. The only way to avoid this is to use the bathrooms as they are thermal sensors only detecting increases in temperature and not airborne particles.

So again I warn you not to set off any alarms as you will be liable for up to $1240

If  an alarm occurs and someone does not come forward to admit their responsibility then the fee will be divided between the whole floor.

SO PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SET OFF AN ALARM AS I DO NOT WISH TO CHARGE ANYONE THAT AMOUNT OF MONEY.

The funny thing about this email is at the beginning of the year the residence was having problems with the alarm systems and they were going off ALL THE TIME.  Do they think we wanted that?  It was not our fault that the system needed maintenance and now we're getting threatened with fines.  My floor has never caused a fire alarm but if there ever is one you better believe I'm not paying $1200 for Rotary's horrible fire alarm system.

This place is a joke.  Do they really think they can get money from students?  Would I be living here if I had money?!  **shakes head**  Ridiculous.

To live in the world without becoming aware of the meaning of the world is like wandering about in a great library without touching the books.

The Secret Teachings of All Ages

Thursday, September 17, 2009

I haven't written at all this week as I've been pretty busy in practicum.  I can't believe how quickly the week has flown by.  Unfortunately, I have not been teaching a full course load and it is the last week of the school term so there isn't full classes of students either.  That doesn't mean I haven't been exhausted!!  Last night I fell asleep at 8pm, was woken up by our loud speaker at 9, and then woken again at 9:20 when Liz called.  Luckily I was able to get back to sleep each time, waking finally at 6am this morning.

It's Thursday night here which means it's rowdy in the area; bar nights run on Thurs/Fri/Sat and Tues.  I always shut my windows and turn on the air conditioner to block the noise but it doesn't always work, I hope tonight is not one of the nights where I am awoken by hollering girls.

After this week I'll have a two week break (one at Uni, one on reading week) before heading back to prac. for another three weeks.  It looks like over reading week Liz and I will be heading with our friend Rachael to her parents house out in Cairns - her parents will be away so we'll get the place to ourselves and be able to explore the Daintree.  I'll post about that later if it goes through.

Anyway, not much else to say, just wanted to touch base.

Talk to you soon.  :)

To complete more volunteer hours (almost done!) I've volunteered with the Art Department, who will be doing mosaic pieces on rocks around the Nursing buildings.  I won't be around for the actual gluing and placing of the tiles but I am around for the tile smashing!!

That's me crouched on the ground smashing some tile for a colour sample.  I'll be in prac. next week and won't be able to help out but should return the following week.

Before I went out for dinner I received a call from our main gatehouse where a delivery had arrived.  My lovely parents and Sis  had sent me a beautiful bouquet of flowers!  They make my room smell nice.
Liz and I waiting for Bec to come pick us up for dinner.

For dinner we went to La Porchetta, an Italian restaurant.  I enjoyed a margarita pizza.  Pictured below is Khan, myself, Jess, Suzie, and Sophie. The Canadian girls had included birthday hats in my package and there was enough for everyone!

This is Katie, Racheal, Liz and Bec - all wearing their hats as well!!

Another ice cream cake!!!  It was a delicious vanilla cake with chocolate chunks. The girls sang a Happy Birthday song that turned into 'For She's a Jolly Good Fellow,' which then turned into something else; hence my laughter.

Today has been a good start to my 26th year with birthday wishes crossing the globe to get to me.  I received my Parents, Grandpa's and Aunt Laura's birthday wishes yesterday but refrained from opening the cards; my Mom ordered me not to open them. DO NOT OPEN UNTIL SEPT 8TH.  So, this morning I opened their heart felt cards and the birth-day began.
My Rotary friends were delightful and an Aussie ice cream cake and cards awaited my awakening.  I've already had one piece of cake and am itching for some more, thanks Tim!!  I hope he doesn't mind that I dove into it while he was out... you know me and cake.... no refraining there.

I have just returned from a trip to the residence office where a big parcel awaited me from 11 wonderful females.  You know someone knows you too well when a crown and Princess sash accompany your birthday gift.  Yes my birthday is all about me, if you ask Jamie I normally claim the whole month!  'It's my birthday and I said so!' The girls (Amanda, Kim, Lisa, Sonia, Dez, Ivana, Apryl, Michelle, Tan, Lori and Shannon) were very thoughtful and included a Tim Hortons mug (just in time, my current mug is falling apart and leaks all over me!!), Tea, KETCHUP CHIPS (Lays and Pringles!), FUN DIP, and many more personal items.  Love it!!  I love surprises and you girls got me!  It's nice to know an excellent group of people are awaiting my return.... not that I thought otherwise... but still.

Tonight I will be going out for dinner with a group of people from school.  We're going to try an Italian restaurant, La Porchetta.  The menu looks good and I'm sure it will be a good time.  For the girls, I'll wear the sash and crown... lol....

Speaking to my Mom this morning she pointed out that today is a special day for both of us as she was 26 years old when she had me!!  Kinda scary that at my age my Mom was popping out a kid!! **shiver** Not there yet.  Another thing I'm not ready for is marriage!  Apparently there was some confusion on a post I had made a while back (a discussion with Tania) giving some the impression that I am soon to be wed.  NOT THE CASE!  We were discussing a Wedding Bells Bootcamp exercise class that the group of us had done before I left the country.  Just because the class is for brides doesn't mean you have to be one!!!  I have reread my comment and understand how the confusion (for some) could have happened however, this is not the case.  My dear friend Kim, is next!!!

Hey, Hey,

Last Thursday Liz, Racheal and I went skating for Racheal's birthday.  I forgot how hard skating is!!  I haven't been for at least 15 years and I really was learning all over again.  Luckily I didn't fall as the rink had a nice layer of water skimming the ice - would have soaked my butt.

This past weekend was pretty laid back although Friday was a big P.I.T.A!!  I woke up Friday morning to my laptop yelling 'CORRUPTION ERROR' through bold, blue, capitals.  My heart broke in two.  There was nothing that I could do to fix it.  I had flash backs of Tania and Ray saying, 'reboot, reboot,' but that didn't work and safe mode was non-existent.  I ended up dragging out the Yellow Pages and calling a few computer guys within Townsville.  The first quote I got was for $300-400.... **jaw drops to ground**   All I could envision was throwing my laptop off my balcony but realized that would only create instant gratification and would soon fade when I realized the laptop won the war.  Quote number two was for $130, but this was to diagnose only - then I thought 'don't doctors charge less than that??' and moved to the next ad.  I was slowly slipping into insanity as I realized seven months of memories were on this laptop and I had never backed a single gigabyte up.

Finally I reached a guy by the name of Mark who said he would be able to fix it for around $60, but told me it would not be more than $100; sign me up.  I trudged out of residence, still in my pj's, and caught the bus to Kevin-Rudd-knows-where; an approximately 45 minute bus route meaning I was about 6 km from residence.  I dropped off my laptop (took 2 minutes) than waited an hour for the next bus.  I reached home and had 20 minutes to stuff overcooked pasta down my throat and change into decent clothing before catching the next bus to my high school meeting; another 45 minute ride.

Meeting complete.  I waited 45 minutes for the bus which took me 10 minutes down the road, 2 minutes to pick up laptop ($79.00), an hour wait for the bus and a 45 minute ride home.  Luckily after 8 hours of running around on Townsville public transit, and $8.00 in bus fare, I felt elated.   I was elated at my physical restraint (not throwing my laptop off a balcony) and felt I had achieved something by not killing anyone during my day of horror.  I guess with age comes something....

Luckily my laptop seems healed and I once again have contact with the Canadian world, Oh Canada!  Today my laptop acted up a bit and crashed three times in a row.  I mentioned this to Tim and his response, 'Have you backed your data up yet?'  I turned and walked away.......

Today JCU got back to me on when I'm allowed to leave Townsville and my return date has been pushed up by almost two weeks which should be nice.  I have a bunch of stuff to do when I get back to Canada but I'm definitely going to hit the beach before I leave here.  I figure I better get as much Vit D as I can before I return to the frozen tundra.

On a sad note and a weighting issue, tomorrow is the day of reckoning, the day I have been avoiding.... tomorrow I am officially closer to 30 than 20.  My friends and I will be going out for dinner and luckily there will be people older than me coming along **clears throat** Leighton.  I figure since I'm not celebrating in Canada (my birth place and home residence) it doesn't really count so technically I'll be 25 for another year.  Haha Suckers!

It's already September, hard to believe.  This is my favourite time of year in Canada so it's bittersweet with the weather warming up so rapidly here in Townsville.  September is good for the hot days and cool nights....  soon will be halloween and the dreaded chill of the Canadian winter.

Canadians, suck in as much of that sunshine as you can because before you know it the land will be the barren, white wasteland.

Hope you have a cheery day!

PS - I'm going ice skating on Thursday.  Apparently Queenslanders have a soft spot for the cold like we do.  It should be interesting to see how I do on skates, especially as I can't remember the last time I went skating.  Also, I don't really have the proper attire, like gloves!!!  No sense looking for them either, I'm sure regular stores do not sell them!!  Perhaps gardening gloves would work....???
