Headed to Charters Towers today. There are 50 of us going, as part of a school function. We had the option to visit schools (secondary and elementary) within Townsville or Charters Towers. As an International student this isn't rocket science - I'm getting on the bus. We have been warned that due to flooding we may not be able to go, which means they'll drag us to a school in Townsville, but as of yesterday the sun was shining. It rained last night, flooding our little river a bit, but I'm hoping it wasn't enough to take out the roads again!
A little about the area: Charters Towers used to be a gold mining town approximately an hour to an hour and a half from Townsville. Some of the areas oldest buildings are found in this town, so perhaps as we drive through, I'll be snapping pictures!! I hope we will get a little bit of time to explore the town, even on our lunch break, as I cannot see myself doing a special trip to go up there again. We'll have to see.
This weekend we're (Liz, Taruna and I) probably heading to the Whitsundays; there are some details to iron out first, but it's looking pretty good. One of the guys in our class, his buddy owns a catermaran and invited the three of us up for the weekend. It would cost $300 or more to do this trip on my own so I'm taking the opportunity for sure. It sounds like a great time.
If we don't end up going I should be able to get there during my second placement as Liz and I have asked to go to Bowen, which is a short 30-45 minutes from Airlie Beach, a jump off to the Whitsundays. So if that works out I could be living there for 3 weeks!!! That would give me enough time to see quite a bit of the area.
Anyway, got to get out of here... we have to leave at 8, I still need to eat. I'll take lots of pictures and hopefully be able to post them tonight!
